Very cool to stop in and visit the first location of Krispy Kreme.If you stop by when the red hot light sign is on you can enjoy a free glazed original donut.

A little hard to find from a car as it's at ground level. It's in the corner lot across from the Baker.

There are no donuts here unless you brought your own. The sweet history of Krispy Kreme began in 1937 when its inventor, Vernon Rudolph, rented space in a small warehouse on South Main Street in the center of Historic Old Salem, Winston-Salem. Rudolph first supplied his yeast-raised doughnuts to nearby supermarkets, but as the bakery's enticing aroma attracted people to the door, he decided to make a hole in the wall and sell hot doughnuts to customers directly. The flagship store has since relocated across town to Stratford Road. Other well-known culinary businesses, such as Garner Foods, which produces Texas Pete hot sauce and Green Mountain Gringo salsa, which has been spicing up kitchens since 1929, are based in Winston-Salem. There is some parking here. The Winston-Salem State University is nearby so it may be a busy area on some days.

I am a visitor from Canada and have been a fan of Krispy Kreme. I really searched up the location of the original Krispy Kreme. I’m glad to finally visit the place. It’s just an open area now but the plaque is good enough as a landmark of the original site.

Really great to see such a historic site, and to see where all of it started. The spot is clearly labelled too, and there was plenty of street parking nearby.
